Join us in congratulating the 2020 SNA Award Winners!

Martha Pellegrino

Blackstone Valley Tech Regional

Massachusetts School Nutrition Employee of the Year

Northeast Regional Winner

A true advocate for health and wellness, Martha is an exceptional asset to the Blackstone Valley Vocational Regional School District. As the school nutritionist and co-chair of the wellness committee, Martha works tirelessly with the food service director to create a program that exudes high quality and safety for all.

Martha’s top priority is to ensure student safety and acceptance especially to those with special dietary needs. She accomplishes this by diligently monitoring every food label and every aspect of meal preparation on a daily basis, which is certainly no small feat. In addition to ensuring food safety, Martha is involved in a variety of other tasks including the planning and execution of the annual wellness fair, grant writing, nutrition coaching and personal training for students and employees as well as managing the health and wellness blog for the community.

In addition to Martha’s day to day responsibilities, encouraging others to live healthy, well balanced lives is a true passion of hers. As a certified trainer Martha works with both students and adults to provide them with nutrition, fitness and mindfulness training. One of the greatest services she provides through her training are alternative forms of physical and nutrition education which have received high praise from her clients. Martha’s passion, dedication and pure enjoyment for her career is a true inspiration for us all!

Jane Rice

Taylor Elementary School, Foxborough
Massachusetts School Nutrition Manager of the Year
Northeast Regional Winner

Known for her green thumb, love of theme meals and an advocate for students' dietary needs, Jane is the school nutrition manager every director wishes they had on their team. As a dedicated and beloved team member of the Foxborough food service department for well over a decade, Jane’s passion and pure joy of this industry is evident in all she does. Jane started her career as a food service substitute when her twins entered kindergarten and has worked her way through the ranks over the past 17+ years.

Jane has become well known at the Foxborough schools for her role in implementing tower gardens in the kitchen as well as throughout the district, creating an invaluable experience for the students and staff. The tower gardens have become so successful that not only are the gardens providing produce for the kitchens, Jane has taken on the responsibility of managing all of the towers throughout the district and is even slated to be a guest speaker at a future SNA event to educate others about her endeavors. Her creativity shines during theme meals where she is known to create fun and exciting menu options, cleverly decorates the serving lines and encourages her staff to dress up and join in on all the fun. Jane is incredibly dedicated to all students but takes great pride in ensuring those with special dietary restrictions are provided with safe and delicious meals on a daily basis. In Jane’s words, “I never thought I would fall in love in what I do”.... but aren’t we all so happy that you did!

Sue Murray
Nauset Schools
Massachusetts School Nutrition Director of the Year

Sue embodies all of what a successful school nutrition director should be and then some! Her dedication, passion, and creativity to her career has resulted in a prospering school nutrition department and inspiring mentor to many.

Since becoming a member of the Nauset Regional School District, Sue has completely reinvented and rejuvenated the school nutrition program in countless ways. From hosting parent luncheons, taste testing events and themed meals to procuring higher quality foods to updating and modernizing the district website to keep the community informed and connected, Sue has turned a struggling program into a financially stable and highly recognized department.

Not only is Sue an asset to the Nauset School District, she is also an inspiring and dedicated community member. Over the past few years, Sue has spent her summers managing not one but two concession stands for the nationally known Cape Cod Baseball League. Not only does this provide great advertising for her school meal programs but it also provides additional work for her employees and even some students over the summer months. Successfully managing the concessions has allowed the district to reinvest in the school nutrition department by purchasing new kitchen equipment and a composting machine in addition to financially supporting the high school culinary arts program.

Sue has been an active member of the SNA of Mass since 2003 holding over eight positions including delegate, delegate elect two times over, membership chairperson, a member of three different committees and most recently elected as our state’s Vice President. Sue is truly an inspiration for all and we are incredibly lucky and proud to have her as our 2020 SNA of Mass and SNA Northeast Regional Director of the Year!
