An Opportunity to Make a Difference
by Gail Koutroubas, President SNA of Mass.

How exciting to be a school nutrition professional. We should all be inspired with the attention that our programs have been receiving from the State House to the White House. We have an opportunity to make a difference for all children in Massachusetts by serving healthy foods.

I challenge directors to look at their programs and serve healthy foods. I challenge our managers to provide opportunities for students to view kitchens as learning labs, introducing new fruits, vegetables, and new menu items. I challenge all line staff to smile, interact, and encourage students to eat healthy and try new exciting food options. I challenge myself and the SNA of Mass. board to mentor and support members with the resources available to be the best at what we do every day in our school cafeterias and classrooms.

School nutrition programs will be challenged more than ever over the next few years and we must be ready. Participation in our reimbursable breakfast and lunch programs will be a key component as we eliminate unhealthy foods. The message is clear. Well-nourished children succeed.

Thank you for the opportunity to serve as your president in the coming year. This is truly an opportunity to give back to the association that has given me so much throughout my career in school nutrition. My experience as a kitchen worker, cook, manager, caterer and director have afforded me the opportunity to understand the complex and demanding responsibilities we undertake. I worked my way up through the ropes and learned by doing. I respect each one of you and thank you for what you do for children and for giving me this wonderful opportunity.

We must collectively stand up for change in our programs. Directors, managers, line staff, and office support staff, standing together will make a difference.
