CONGRATULATIONS to our SNA of Mass. Winner!
Maki Koetting, Lincoln Public School District
Maki is very talented at using the USDA commodities as well as preparing any new item that we can come up with. She helps with ordering, receiving and inventory. She is very strong at cost control as well as utilization.
In addition to preparing the food, she is also one of our main servers at lunch time. She often goes around the kitchen with a smile and the students love to join in along with a custodian or two. It would not be surprising to see the students and the lunch ladies singing and dancing in the line. It makes for quite a festive environment, especially around the various holidays where staff sports multi-colored hats and shirts to match the colors of the season. She jokes with the students and keeps them laughing all while serving.
She has been known to step in for other staffers to help with students who may need a walk down to the nurse's office. When the custodians are short-handed, she has helped to clean up the cafe. She has taken out the recycling and helped with various tasks not always in her job description.
Maki works very hard to keep up her professional development with CEU's. She passed her ServSafe training even though English is her second language by obtaining materials in her native language. She is also introducing us to foods and language from her country to expand our menu and horizons.
Maki has worked in the school nutrition profession most of her adult life. She has worked in another country as well as in our system. She began as a substitute with us and worked her way up to become the lead cook in our largest kitchens. She was a standout right from the beginning and took on new responsibilities easily.
Maki has gone above and beyond to support the food service program in many ways. She asks to come in early to begin preparing difficult menus. She keeps track of production information in her own notebook, in her own language so that she has a quick reference during a busy production schedule. We often use her notebook for a quick check on details of a recent menu item. She is very thorough and accurate.
Maki works very hard to make a pleasant working environment for all her co-workers. She is quiet and pleasant but also has a great sense of humor. She is very reliable and dependable and is very rarely out. She has helped out at other schools and has made a good impression wherever she has worked.
The Employee of the Year award recognizes non-managerial school nutrition employees for the contributions they have made throughout their school nutrition career.
SNA celebrates members who work every day to ensure well-nourished students across the country are prepared for success!
